2024 Fantasy Outlook
Ashby began experiencing left shoulder discomfort in August of 2022, exactly four weeks after he signed a five-year, $20.5 million pre-arbitration contract extension with the Brewers. That shoulder issue began rearing its ugly head again in the spring of 2023, eventually leading to April 7 season-ending surgery. He was able to fit in a minor-league rehab assignment at the tail end of the 2023 campaign but surrendered 14 runs -- 12 earned -- on seven hits and 14 walks over seven innings (seven appearances) between High-A Wisconsin, Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville. Ashby is expected to be ready for the 2024 major-league season and still presumably possess a nasty slider-changeup combo to pair with his mid-90s fastball, but it'll take a lot of trust to reach for him in any sort of fantasy setting this spring. Sent down to minors
The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports.
ANALYSIS
Ashby came into camp with a shot at a rotation spot, but he allowed four runs (three earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over three innings and continued to struggle to regain the velocity he showed prior to his shoulder surgery. The left-hander could still play a major role with the Brewers this season, but he'll try to sharpen things up in the minors first.

Who's winning the National League's biggest job battles, and who's losing them? Three injuries in the Marlins rotation have put A.J. Puk in the former camp.
Brad Johnson has moved to the NL Central, and in Cincinnati, Hunter Greene, with one of the biggest arms in baseball, clearly has considerable potential.
The NL Central is full of job battles as always this spring, though in a pleasant turn from most recent seasons, many of them feature exciting players like Chicago's Christopher Morel.
Latest Fantasy Rumors
More rotation competition
Ashby's chances of opening 2023 in the starting rotation are likely diminished after the Brewers signed Wade Miley on Wednesday, which was reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Ashby started in 19 of his 27 appearances last season and had a 4.44 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 126:47 K:BB across 107.1 innings. The 24-year-old's long-term outlook is still that of a starter, but with Milwaukee returning its full rotation and adding Miley to the mix, Ashby could provide more immediate value as a lefty reliever. Adrian Houser, who finished 2022 on the IL with a groin issue, and Ashby are likely to receive some starts regardless of their roles to open the campaign since manager Craig Counsell has utilized a six-man rotation at times over the past couple years.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
You want to look at his 2-10 record with a 4.44 ERA last season and just discard him into the scrapheap of your 2023 draft plans. Do so at your own peril because Ashby could bounce back in a big way this season. He still has that filthy slider that the league struggles to square up, but he ran into troubles last season with his changeup that the league had no trouble hitting in 2022 (.295) after struggling to hit it in 2021 (.167). The xBA on the pitch in 2021 said he was lucky, but the near 80-point gap in those two rates on the pitch in 2022 was simply unfair. The rest of Ashby's skillset holds up rather well if he can get his repertoire back under control. Milwaukee believes in the talent as they gave him a five-year contract with options in the midst of his summer struggles. The pieces for a successful 2023 are there if Ashby can get realigned this winter.
