2024 Fantasy Outlook
Clevinger was a legitimate upper-tier fantasy starter between 2018-20, registering a combined 2.91 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 416 strikeouts in 367.2 innings (61 starts) between Cleveland and San Diego. Then came a run of injuries, including Tommy John elbow surgery, and now he's only a semi-attractive streaming consideration in standard mixed leagues as he enters his age-33 campaign. Clevinger was posting strikeout percentages in the 27-33 range at his peak, but that number finished at 18.8 percent in 2022 and 20.0 percent in 2023. His fastball did come back to life a bit last year in Chicago and he put up a respectable 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 24 outings, but the right-hander struggles with durability, doesn't miss enough bats and is too prone to blowups at this point in his career. Could make next start in majors
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol hinted Wednesday that Clevinger could be added to the 26-man active roster next week to make his next start with the big club, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. "We're expecting him to join us here pretty soon. He felt good [Tuesday]," Grifol said of Clevinger. "The news from our trainers was he's excited about how he felt, he's excited about how he threw the ball. We'll assess it, but I would expect him here shortly."
ANALYSIS
Because he didn't go through a proper spring training after remaining unsigned all offseason until inking a one-year deal with the White Sox until April 2, Clevinger has spent the first month of the regular season getting ramped up. He made the second of two starts at Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, covering four innings (71 pitches) and striking out four while allowing two earned runs on six hits and one walk. The White Sox have already announced their starting rotation through Sunday's game in St. Louis, but Clevinger should be a strong candidate to make his 2024 big-league debut early next week at Tampa Bay, if the organization's brain trust determines he doesn't need another tune-up start in the minors.

The White Sox made one of the first big splashes of the offseason, signing Clevinger to a one-year, $12 million deal. Clevinger's return from November 2020 Tommy John surgery was delayed by a sore knee and he would go on to miss additional time with a triceps strain, but the right-hander still took the mound 23 times for San Diego (22 starts) during the 2022 regular season. His fastball velocity was down more than a tick from the last time we saw him and his strikeout rate was nowhere close to where it was during his peak years with Cleveland (18.8 K% last season). His home-run rate shot up to a career-high 1.6 HR/9. It's tough to evaluate Clevinger for 2023 given the additional injuries on top of rehab from reconstructive elbow surgery. In theory, Clevinger should get closer to being himself the further he is removed from surgery, but he has totaled just 282 innings since the start of the 2019 season and should be projected conservatively.
