2023 Fantasy Outlook
It was surprising to see Huerter traded from Atlanta to Sacramento last season. It really didn't hurt his value, though, averaging 15.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.7 threes per game with his new team. He also shot 49 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range, establishing himself as one of the best pure shooters in the league. Sacramento shocked many when they finished third in the Western Conference last year. But they chose to do almost nothing in the offseason. That's excellent news for Huerter's fantasy value, especially since this team has very little depth at their wing positions. Huerter is also just one De'Aaron Fox injury away from taking on more usage, so he's an intriguing choice around pick 150 in most drafts. We've seen him look like a playmaker at times in the past, and we can't overlook a bump in usage since this is his second season for a new team, and he is still just 24 years old. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Kevin Joseph Huerter was born in 1998 in Albany, New York. He is the son of Tom and Erin Huerter. Father Tom played collegiate basketball at Sienna College, leading them to their first ever NCAA Tournament in 1989. Kevin has a brother and two sisters. His brother, Thomas Jr., also played basketball at Sienna. Kevin attended Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, just outside of Albany. He starred on the Shenendehowa's basketball and baseball team. He was the starting center fielder for the baseball team, which won the state championship his senior year. Huerter's nickname is "Red Velvet." While attending the University of Maryland, Huerter majored in Letters and Sciences. Fans can follow Red Velvet on Twitter @KevinHuerter and on Instagram @kevin_huerter. While Huerter was at Maryland for two seasons, coach Mark Turgeon did not have to figure out who to start at one of the wing spots. The 6-7 guard started all 65 games in which he appeared for the Terrapins. In 2016-17, he started next to fellow freshman Justin Jackson and provided 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds, while hitting 37.1 percent of his 3-pointers. Huerter scored 19 points in both of his postseason games as a freshman (losses to Northwestern in the Big 10 Tournament and Xavier in the first round of the NCAA Tournament). The guard increased his volume as a sophomore and pushed his averages to 14.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while making 41.7 percent of his long-range shots. He hit seven 3-pointers in a November loss at Syracuse. Huerter scored at least 11 points in his last 25 games before declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft, where he was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks with the 19th overall pick.

Out For Season
April 3, 2024
Huerter (shoulder) underwent successful surgery Wednesday to repair his torn left labrum and will be out for the remainder of the season, Brenden Nunes of KHTK Sactown Sports 1140 reports.
ANALYSIS
Huerter went through the surgery without any issues and will be embark on a lengthy rehab process, though he's expected to be fully cleared for training camp in the fall. He'll look to move past a disappointing 2023-24 season in which he averaged a career-low 24.4 minutes per game and shot a career-worst 36.1 percent from three-point range in 64 games (59 starts). In 2024-25, Huerter will be entering his final year of a four-year, $65 million contract, and he could see his playing time increase out of necessity next season if the Kings don't retain pending free agent sixth man Malik Monk.

Role appears safe

Huerter popped for 26 points in 39 minutes during Sunday's loss to Milwaukee, while Chris Duarte and Keon Ellis both logged DNP-CDs.
ANALYSIS
After being reintroduced to the starting lineup Jan. 9, Huerter was plagued by an ankle sprain for the next two contests, but Sunday's boom likely solidifies his spot in the first unit -- especially in the context of Chris Duarte concurrently failing to impress. Huerter's plus-5.3 net rating is the fourth-highest mark on the Kings, but the 25-year-old had connected on just 32.3 percent of his shots and 18.2 percent of his threes across nine games prior to his Jan. 10 ankle sprain. Huerter's slump can be viewed as justifiable rationale for coach Mike Brown to experiment with new lineups, as Huerter is shooting a career-low 34.5 percent from deep this season. Speculatively, there remains a possibility that Sacramento is attempting to build momentum for his trade value as well.

Huerter's role with the Hawks last season was the same as the previous two. He saw 29.6 minutes per game and averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Encouragingly, he reached a career-high 57.0 true-shooting percentage on splits of 45/39/81. He's shown some potential as a secondary ballhandler, but he's primarily been utilized as a perimeter shooter. During the offseason, the 24-year-old was dealt to the Kings. It seems likely he'll start at shooting guard, though he'll be competing for minutes with Malik Monk, Davion Mitchell, Jeremy Lamb and Terence Davis. Huerter's role doesn't figure to change much, as the Kings will run the offense through De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. Last season, Huerter ranked 151st in per-game fantasy production for eight-category leagues. He's never ranked higher than 105th, so there's no reason fantasy managers should gamble inside the top 100 for Huerter, who could end up as the fifth option in the Kings' offense.
With the Hawks adding a ton of talent and depth during the 2020 offseason, Huerter's production took a slight step back. However, he was still plenty productive and crucial to Atlanta's gameplan. The third-year guard averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 30.8 minutes. He also made 2.0 threes per game at 36.3 percent. That resulted in Huerter ranking 122nd in fantasy on a per-game basis. Heading into 2021-22, Huerter's role shouldn't change significantly, as the Hawks practically made no moves in the offseason. There's potential for him to see fewer minutes if Cam Reddish takes a real step forward, but there's always a chance Huerter himself takes a step forward. De'Andre Hunter will also be healthy after missing much of last season, which impedes Huerter's path to easy playing time. Still, Huerter should be able to garner sixth-man minutes easily and provide some three-point shooting and secondary playmaking. His upside is relatively low, however, so he's more of a deep-league selection.
Huerter made quality improvements during the 2019-20 season with the Hawks -- his sophomore campaign. In 31.4 minutes per game, the 6-foot-7 shooting guard averaged 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.3 threes and 1.4 combined steals-plus-blocks. He also had six 20-point games and two double-doubles. That resulted in Huerter ranking 105th on a per-game basis in eight-category fantasy leagues. Heading into 2020-21, the sharpshooter and secondary playmaker will look to keep building those skills for the revamped Hawks, who have playoff aspirations. However, his role is in jeopardy. The Hawks made splashes this offseason by adding both Bogdan Bogdanovic and Danilo Gallinari, the former being a direct threat to Huerter's usage. It's possible Galliari comes off the bench and Huerter still starts, but the path to 30-plus minutes won't be free this time around.
Huerter put together a solid rookie season with Atlanta last year, earning far more playing time than anticipated when he was selected 19th overall. Projected as a role player, he started 59 of 75 games played and logged significant minutes (27.3 per game). In his first year, the Maryland product finished with 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. He also drained 1.8 threes at a 38.5 percent clip, living up to his pre-draft expectations as a sharpshooter. He'll start the 2019-20 season as the likely starter at shooting guard, where he could push for increased minutes and take a step forward in his overall play. Huerter seems like a good bet for another year of consistent production in threes, but he can be an even more valuable fantasy contributor if he can improve on his rebounding, assist numbers and defense.
Huerter spent just two seasons at Maryland, using a strong sophomore campaign and an impressive showing at the NBA Combine to vault him into a first-round pick. He profiles first and foremost as a deep-ball threat. Huerter canned 2.3 three-pointers per game at a 41.7 percent clip, helping him finish with a final average of 14.7 points. The 6-foot-7 wing also added 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists, while knocking down 50.3 percent of his field goal attempts despite nearly half of those attempts coming from beyond the arc. After being selected with the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Huerter should slot in as a key reserve on the wing in Atlanta. However, Kent Bazemore is locked into the starting shooting guard spot and offseason addition Jeremy Lin has the ability to play off the ball, which will likely hurt Huerter's chances of logging big minutes as a rookie. It wouldn't be surprising to see his role increase as the season progresses and the Hawks are eliminated from the playoffs, but either way, Huerter is still likely only worth a look in dynasty leagues.
