2024 Tournament PreviewAfter parting ways with LSU and taking a year off, coach Will Wade is back, leading McNeese State to its third NCAA Tournament in his first year at the helm. Wade used the transfer portal to land leading-scorer Shahada Wells (17.8 ppg) from TCU, 6-9 center Antavion Collum (8.8 ppg) from CS-Bakersfield and sharpshooter Javohn Garcia (11.4 ppg) from UMass. Mix that with incumbent forward Christian Shumate (11.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg), and the Cowboys boast an offense that ranks 51st nationally (per KenPom). McNeese State is an excellent shooting team that thrives on turnovers. It ranks 28th in effective field-goal percentage, including 39.4 percent from long range (seventh in the nation), as four starters shoot at least 40 percent from deep. It also ranks 25th in offensive turnover rate and sixth in defensive turnover rate. With three Quad 2 wins (VCU, UAB, Michigan) and only one bad loss, the Cowboys have the coaching and talent to sneak up on unsuspecting opponents.
