ANALYSIS
Grace scored his best round of the tournament Friday when he tallied six birdies to finish five-under for the day. He tapered off in the final round Saturday as he couldn't overcome his three bogeys. Grace's best season to date on the PGA Tour came in 2016 where he picked up his first win on his way to more than $2.8 million. The four seasons that followed were a bit of a letdown as he failed to win again and never threatened $2 million again. He finally surpassed $2 million in 2020-21, which was largely due to a win at the Purto Rico Open. Winning an alternate-field doesn't exactly inspire confidence, however, and given Grace's inconsistent track record, it's hard to imagine that he'll ever post huge numbers. As such, he's a risky salary cap option this season.
A participant in the FedEx Cup Playoffs in each of the last four seasons, Grace had a miserable 2019-20 campaign with a best result of T9 and 11 missed cuts in 16 events. His OWGR is inflated by a win at the South African Open - a European Tour event with a weak field that moved his ranking up from 119th to 73rd at the time. On a positive note, Grace ranked inside the top 25 in SG: Approach for the season and if he can improve his putting he should see more consistent results.
Grace's first official season on the PGA Tour was a rousing success. During the 2016 season, Grace picked-up his first victory on the PGA Tour and fell just short of $3 million in earnings. In the three years since, he's been remarkably consistent, but he's failed to even come close to the numbers that he posted during his rookie season. Grace typically plays around 20 events on the PGA Tour each season, which makes it difficult to see a big bump unless he wins somewhere along the line. It's tough to forecast a win from someone who is typically in this range on the FedEx list, which means he's not a great salary cap option this season.
In 2016, Grace picked-up a win at the RBC Heritage, and top-5s at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. As a European Tour regular, who played just around the minimum number of events on the PGA Tour to stay eligible, it was about the best anyone could have hoped for out of him. In the two years since, Grace has not won, nor has he finished in the top-5 at a major, which is why his earnings have dropped each season. Grace is a fine golfer, who has the World Golf Ranking that allows him access to the biggest events, but unless he's going to win or contend at a major, his upside will be limited. As such, his value as a salary cap option is not nearly as high as his value in other formats.
With just more than $1.3 million in earnings and only two top-10s, it was certainly not a great year for Grace, but there is a lot of opportunity here. Grace earned more than $2.8 million during the 2015-16 season, so the upside is certainly there and his World Golf Ranking is currently 37th, which means he'll have access to the biggest events next season. All of which adds up to a nice salary cap option this season. Grace is not a workhorse on the PGA Tour, but he did up his events played from 18 to 20 last season, so if he's in that neighborhood again this season, he should easily top his number from last season.
In his first full year on the PGA Tour, Grace not only doubled his previous high earnings number, but he also picked-up his first win and possibly more impressive, finished in the top-10 in 33% of his starts. Entering last season, Grace was a sneaky-good selection in salary cap leagues because his price was just below $1.5 million. That's not the case this year though as his price is nearly doubled heading into this season. As such, he's no longer a good salary cap option, but does provide value in a draft league -- somewhere in the fourth round.
