Wideman will be replaced in the lineup by 2020 first-round pick Justin Barron for Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

Barron's been excellent in the AHL this season, racking up seven goals and 16 points through 25 games, so if he impresses Wednesday, it's possible the Canadiens will want to give him an extended look, which would likely eat into Wideman's playing time substantially. Wideman's picked up just four helpers through 21 contests this season.

Playing his first NHL games since the 2018-19 season, which he split between Ottawa, Edmonton, and Florida, Wideman became an important player for a Montreal team which posted the worst record in the league last year. He posted 27 points, including 12 with the man advantage, in 64 games, although Wideman's minus-25 rating was indicative of just how poorly the Canadiens played as a team. The Habs made virtually no defensive improvements this offseason, making it highly likely Wideman will return to the same role he saw a season ago. That might be enough for late-round fantasy value in standard formats, but the plus-minus rating again figures to be a problem.
