Past Fantasy Outlooks
Comtois looked like a potential breakout candidate after posting 16 goals and 33 points in 55 games in his 2020-21 age-21 campaign, but he took a significant step backwards last season, managing just six goals and 16 points in 52 games. Comtois also finished with a minus-17 rating. There was some thought the Ducks might move on from the former 2017 second-round pick this offseason, but the club elected to hold on to Comtois in hopes of a rebound. Comtois is still young enough to be a key piece for Anaheim when the team finally returns to the postseason, but he's not a fantasy option in most formats at the moment.
Comtois was one of the few Ducks to have a productive campaign in 2020-21, registering 16 goals and 17 assists in 55 contests. It was a clear breakout for the third-year winger, who only picked up four of his points on the power play. The Quebec native, still just 22 years old, seems like a lock for a top-six job on a team trying to climb out of a rebuild on the progress of young players. Comtois figures to lead the way, and if he continues to succeed, he could be good for 50-plus points with 100-plus hits and shots on goal with no obvious bias between scoring or playmaking. There won't be many intriguing fantasy options in Anaheim, but Comtois' potential as a multi-category asset can't be ignored in the later rounds.
Comtois had a solid first half of the 2019-20 season with 11 points in 29 games, but his services weren't needed after the Ducks' forwards got back to full strength in January. He continued his strong play with AHL San Diego to the tune of 24 points in 31 outings. Comtois will be a longshot to make the NHL roster this year, as he'd need to unseat one of Max Jones or Nicolas Deslauriers to gain an everyday role. Instead, the Ducks will likely keep the second-round pick from 2017 in the minors where he can gain experience. Dynasty managers may be interested in stashing the 21-year-old, but he's safe to leave undrafted in single-season leagues.
Comtois finished his junior career with a whopping 244 points in 207 QMJHL games split between Victoriaville and Drummondville over the past four seasons. At the NHL level, the 20-year-old recorded seven points in 10 games last year before joining AHL San Diego for its playoff run, adding 10 points in 16 minor-league games. The 2017 second-round pick will now set his sights on earning a permanent role with the Ducks during training camp in September. If he's able to accomplish that feat, Comtois could slide into a middle-six role with the big club while seeing time on the team's second power-play unit, giving him double-digit goal and 40-point upside.
The time is now for Comtois, whom the Ducks selected with a 2018 second-round (50th overall) pick. A rash of forward injuries to the parent club cleared the path for the Quebec native reaching the top level so soon, but he'll do well offensively if he performs anything like he did at junior with Victoriaville this past three seasons; he's added 92 goals and 104 assists over 180 games at that amateur rank.
