December 15, 2021
Borgman was waived unconditionally by the Stars for the purpose of terminating his contract Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Borgman has yet to appear in an NHL contest this season, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to his native Sweden to continue his playing career now that he's no longer under contract with the Stars. The 26-year-old blueliner may have played his last NHL game.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2018
Borgman is three years removed from his last NHL action, when he had 11 points in 48 games with the Maple Leafs in 2017-18. Since then, he's racked up 33 points in 98 games in the AHL between the Toronto Marlies and San Antonio Rampage. Offensively, the 25-year-old Swede is unlikely to ever contribute much more than 10 to 15 points per year. With the Lightning in 2020-21, he's on a two-way contract, which makes him a prime candidate for the minors or the taxi squad. Borgman isn't exactly Norris-caliber defensively, so his challenge for a third-pairing role alongside Erik Cernak is a long shot with Jan Rutta more likely to fill that role.
Borgman surprised everyone in 2017-18 by breaking camp with the Leafs. After all, it was his first time on North American ice and even the team expected him to play for the Marlies. Borgman picked up three goals and eight assists in 48 games before losing his job to the upstart Travis Dermott. He suffered through some abysmal defensive performances right before he was sent down to the AHL Marlies. He struggled with them, too, as he simply couldn't find his defensive game. Unfortunately, Borgman got hurt early in the Calder Cup playoffs and never made it back into the lineup, even when he got healthy. Clearly in need of more development time, he's likely ticketed for the AHL to start the 2018-19 campaign. The Leafs will determine if those defensive shortcomings can be fixed before he gets a role in the NHL.
