Matty Beniers

21-Year-Old CenterC
Seattle Kraken
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Beniers' 24-goal, 57-point campaign in 2022-23 was enough to earn him the Calder Trophy. He was steady early on, but he quickly gained head coach Dave Hakstol's trust, earning shorthanded minutes as the season progressed. Beniers still shot 16.2 percent, though a player of his pedigree may be able to maintain a highly efficient rate. There's still room for the 20-year-old to grow, and he should have every chance to do so in a top-six role with plenty of power-play time in 2023-24. He won't come cheap on draft day, and it'll be tough to convince a rival dynasty manager to part with him in a trade. Read Past Outlooks

Scores on power play in finale
CSeattle Kraken
April 19, 2024
Beniers scored a power-play goal on three shots in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Wild.
ANALYSIS
Beniers snapped a four-game drought with his goal in the final game of the season. The 21-year-old center had a disappointing year on offense with 15 goals and 37 points over 77 appearances after posting 57 points in 80 games as a rookie. Beniers showed growth in his two-way game, but it'll be interesting to see how negotiations shake out with a new contract needed for the restricted free agent, which is likely to be at the top of the to-do list for general manager Ron Francis.

Up for Calder Trophy
CSeattle Kraken
May 3, 2023
Beniers was named a finalist for the Calder Trophy on Wednesday, TSN's Chris Johnston reports.
ANALYSIS
Beniers is generally expected to win the award after putting up 24 goals and 57 points in 80 regular-season contests. The 20-year-old is the only forward up for the title of Rookie of the Year -- defenseman Owen Power and goalie Stuart Skinner were also named finalists.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
The No. 2 overall pick from the 2021 draft, Beniers completed his sophomore season at the University of Michigan and joined the Seattle lineup in mid-April. He played ten games with the Kraken, producing an impressive three goals and nine points over that span. Beniers' 16.7 shooting percentage is likely to regress over the course of his first full NHL campaign in 2022-23, but he also added four points with the man advantage last year, and the power-play production should be here to stay. Beniers is still a better pick in keeper/dynasty leagues as opposed to re-draft formats, but there should be enough here for Beniers to be a worthy of a mid-to-late round pick regardless of league format on draft day.
