Losing streak hits three
FeatherweightUFC
July 15, 2023
Lutz lost to Melsik Baghdasaryan via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC on ESPN 49 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Lutz was the biggest favorite on the card (-300) his last time out, a submission loss to Daniel Pineda this past March. He found himself a +125 underdog against Baghdasaryan in a fight he had to win, and he couldn't get the job done. Lutz landed a takedown in each of the three rounds, but the opening frame was the only one in which he got the better of the action. He faded as the bout progressed -- something that has been a problem for Lutz in the past. It's rare to see a fighter drop a three-round unanimous decision when they rack up at least 2:48 worth of control time in two of the three frames, but Lutz pulled it off here. The 29-year-old has lost three in a row since a unanimous decision in his UFC debut back in May 2021. Lutz's roster spot is far from secure.

Expected to face Baghdasaryan next
FeatherweightUFC
June 19, 2023
Lutz is expected to face Melsik Baghdasaryan in a featherweight matchup at UFC Vegas 77 on July 15, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Baghdasaryan had previously announced a July 15 return on his personal Twitter account, and now an official UFC site is listing Lutz as his opponent. A two-time Contender Series product, Lutz badly needs a bounce back here after collecting two consecutive losses under the UFC banner. Baghdasaryan, meanwhile, lost his last fight in February two Josh Culibao via second-round submission. Lutz has superior offensive wrestling volume when looking at the numbers side by side, but Baghdasaryan has significant edges in striking volume and striking accuracy.
Falls as biggest favorite on card
FeatherweightUFC
March 25, 2023
Lutz lost to Daniel Pineda via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:50 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 43 on Saturday in San Antonio.
ANALYSIS
Lutz wasn't the least bit competitive despite entering as a -300 favorite, the largest on the entire card. He gave up a takedown moments after the opening bell rang, in addition to being knocked down with a big, looping shot from Pineda in Round 1. Lutz found himself on the mat again early in Round 2 and was able to survive one submission attempt before eventually tapping out to the guillotine choke along the fence. Luz has some power, but his cardio and stand-up defense are both questionable. A two-time winner on Dana White's Contender Series, the 28-year-old Baltimore native has now lost back-to-back fights on the heels of a unanimous decision win over Kevin Aguilar to begin his UFC run.
Up against Daniel Pineda
FeatherweightUFC
January 3, 2023
Lutz will fight Daniel Pineda in a featherweight bout at UFC San Antonio on March 25, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Lutz hasn't been in the Octagon since November 2021 as his matchup with Seungwoo Choi fell through last March. Pineda has been in a similar period of inactivity, as he hasn't fought since June 2021 and also dealt with a suspension for amphetamines.
Needs new opponent
FeatherweightUFC
March 17, 2022
Lutz' opponent, Seungwoo Choi, was forced to withdraw from their March 26 bout due to injury, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
The UFC is currently working on getting Lutz a new opponent. Lutz is hoping to bounce back from a poor showing last November against Pat Sabatini.
Fighting in Columbus
FeatherweightUFC
December 17, 2021
Lutz is slated to face Seungwoo Choi in a featherweight matchup at UFC Columbus on March 26, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lutz struggled mightily in his last fight and lost to Pat Sabatini via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night in late November. Choi snapped a three-fight winning streak in his last appearance when he lost to Alex Caceres via submission (rear-naked choke) in late October. Choi has advantages in both height and reach.
