Burns has been suspended indefinitely by the Florida Athletic Commission pending neurological clearance from an independent physician, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The brutal knockout was enough to catch the commission's attention, so the 37-year-old Burns will be sidelined for the foreseeable future until the aforementioned clearance is gained.

Crushing defeat in Miami

Burns lost to Jack Della Maddalena via TKO (punches) at 3:34 of Round 3 at UFC 299 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
We'll have to wait to see what the official scorecards were at the time of the stoppage, but it looked for all the world like Burns was just a couple minutes away from the upset and a much-needed victory. Burns predictably had his struggles in prolonged striking exchanges between the two, but he landed just enough big shots, which, combined with seven takedowns, had him on the cusp of victory. Yet, he allowed Jack to get back to his feet late and immediately ate a huge knee to the face that effectively ended the fight right then and there. Gilbert will be 38 years of age in July. He has now lost back-to-back fights and is 2-3 in his last five.
Della Maddalena bout up next

The UFC announced Sunday that Burns is scheduled to face Jack Della Maddalena in a welterweight fight at UFC 299 in Miami on March 9.
ANALYSIS
After losing a short-notice five-rounder to Belal Muhammad at UFC 288, Burns will look to get back on track by defending his top spot in the UFC's welterweight division. Currently No. 4 in the UFC's welterweight rankings, Burns will look to prevent a steep drop when facing No. 11 Della Maddalena, who is on a 16-fight win streak, with six victories as part of the promotion.
Routed by Belal Muhammad

Burns lost to Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision (45-50, 46-49, 46-49) at UFC 288 on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.
ANALYSIS
What a difference a month makes. Four weeks ago at this time, Burns was routing Jorge Masvidal in a unanimous decision at UFC 287 in Miami. He now finds himself in a whole heap of trouble at 170 pounds. Gilbert appeared to injure his left shoulder during a Round 1 takedown attempt. He was clearly limited the rest of the way, mentioning it to his corner in between rounds and looking generally dejected throughout the remainder of the bout. That allowed Muhammad, who was excellent, to run away with a clear-cut unanimous decision win. Burns is an excellent fighter and has gotten legitimately better as he has aged, but he will be 37 years old this coming July and is now sporting a .500 record in his past half-dozen bouts. Gilbert seems destined to be one of the better 170-pounders in UFC history to never hold the title.
Fighting again May 6

Burns will fight Belal Muhammed as the co-main event at UFC 288 on May 6, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Burns will fight for the second time in a month after he recently defeated Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision on April 8. The Brazilian mentioned in his post-fight interview that he would not accept another fight unless it was for a championship, however, it seems he has changed his mind on that stance. The winner May 6 would likely be next in line to face either Leon Edwards or Colby Covington for the Welterweight title, as it's widely expected Covington is next up after he was named the backup for the fight between Kamaru Usman and Edwards on March 18.
Eyes title after easy win

Burns defeated Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC 287 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
It was another excellent performance from Burns, who, for the majority of the fight, looked the part of the -450 favorite he entered as. It took Gilbert a full round to get his grappling game going, but once he did, Masvidal was done. Burns was ultimately credited with four takedowns on six attempts, good for 5:41 worth of control time. Gilbert also made significant progress on the feet as the fight progressed, eventually battering Jorge late in the final frame. Burns said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan that he will not accept another fight unless it is for the UFC Welterweight Championship. Gilbert is just 3-2 in his past five fights dating back to February 2021, but with Kamaru Usman dropping a majority decision to Leon Edwards in his rematch for the title at UFC 286 in mid-March, Burns may reasonably be next in line for a shot at the belt.
